Tower Hamlets council works hard to meet the mental health needs of its residents, from provisions and assessment for those with special educational needs, to psychological, psychiatric and social services.
Mind in Tower Hamlets (MITH) aims to improve the mental health needs of the community, the major concern is the high level of mental illness among Tower Hamlets multi-racial communities facing high levels of unemployment, poor overcrowded housing and low incomes.
Mental illness is common, one in six adults suffer from a mental illness at any one time, this will range from depression, anxiety to schizophrenia.
There are approximately 20-30 deaths each year in Tower Hamlets from suicide or undetermined injury. This overall rate is higher locally than the rest of the country and follows the well recognised pattern of higher death rates in men than women.
In addition to this, the admission rate for schizophrenia in Tower Hamlets is significantly higher than for the rest of London and England.
